Accountablity concerns continue to haunt Wikipedia, the free online reference site that gives anyone the power to create or edit entries, and whether the site is a legitimate source for information.
In addition to recent content mishaps, an editor - chococlateboy - on the free reference site recently deleted links to WOMMA as well as to Corante.com, a thought leader in the real-time communication and social networking space. (I have co-contributed to the blog Goyami covering search engine marketing that is published by Corante.com) Pages on Wikipedia about word of mouth and word of mouth marketing that had contained links to WOMMA were deleted by a wikipedia editor chocolateboy. When as why he removed links to WOMMA, the editor responded:
“WOMMA is linked from the DMoz page. The barrier of entry for external links is much higher for marketing-related articles because of the high spam factor. Nevertheless, if you or any other editor can demonstrate that WOMMA is worthy of inclusion by any objective criterion, then by all means reinstate it.”
WOMMA has yet to be reinstated.
What about Word Spreads Quickly.com? The editor had only the nicest harsh words to share:
I removed the links because they are inappropriate. wordspreadsquickly.com is spectacularly non-notable. Nothing links to it, and the site is only a few weeks old, and therefore obvious spam. At least, you’ve made no attempt to disguise this fact, which is worth something.
That makes me feel good…
